80th Anniversary of the Breakthrough of the Syrmian Front Marked

The formal ceremony began with the laying of wreaths, followed by the Serbian national anthem "Bože pravde" ("God of Justice"). A memorial service was held at the Church of Saint Stefan Stiljanovic.

As part of the ceremony, wreaths were also laid by members of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces, representatives of the Provincial Government, the Municipality of Sid, the city of Novi Sad, the Srem Administrative District, as well as representatives of the SUBNOR (Association of War Veterans of the National Liberation War), and members of the diplomatic corps who laid white roses.

The Yugoslav Army broke through the German defenses on the Syrmian Front in the early morning hours of April 12, 1945, exactly 80 years ago.

The breakthrough came after months of grueling trench warfare. The successful advance allowed for the rapid push of Yugoslav troops into the western parts of Yugoslavia and their liberation over the following month.
