OSCE Mission to Serbia announces winners of 2024 "Person of the Year" Award
Veran Matic, President of the Association of Independent Electronic Media and a member of the Permanent Working Group for Journalist Safety, is the recipient of the 2024 "Person of the Year" award from the OSCE Mission.
The award recognizes individuals for their significant contribution to advocating for the values and commitments of the OSCE.
In the justification for the award, the OSCE Ambassador to Serbia, Jan Bratu, stated that Veran Matic was honored for his unwavering support in promoting inclusive dialogue on journalist safety.
His contribution spans several areas, including journalist safety, media reform, and the development of media policy. Additionally, as the president of the Commission for Investigating the Murders of Journalists in Serbia, established by the government in 2013, Matic has been a staunch advocate in the fight against impunity for crimes against journalists and for media freedom.
After receiving the award, Matic said that "the year that is slowly slipping away has been extremely difficult for journalists, at times even bleak, despite the tremendous efforts of all those working to improve media freedom and journalist safety in Serbia."
Matic added that the support he receives in this struggle from the head of the Mission, Jan Bratu, and his media team is "almost priceless."
"The award coming from such an organization represents a great encouragement for the journalism profession and my further work, but also proves that there is some meaning in all of this," said Matic.
Other recipients of the "Person of the Year" award include Ivana Stevanovic, Executive Director of the Slavko Curuvija Foundation, and Nemanja Nenadic, Program Director of the Transparency Serbia organization.
Ivana Stevanovic was recognized for her significant contribution to the fight against impunity for crimes against journalists and her unwavering dedication to promoting professional journalism, while Nemanja Nenadic was honored for his professionalism and commitment to enhancing the fight against corruption and electoral reform.
