Serbian Foreign Minister Meets with Rubio: Opportunity for Strategic Cooperation with the New U.S. Administration

"This visit is a huge opportunity for Serbia to begin strategic cooperation with the new administration early on and relatively at the start of its term, as the first country from the region. I believe we’ll see more results and concrete steps in the weeks and months ahead. The fact that I’m practically among the first from our part of the world to be here as a minister is an act of respect and a sincere desire to change things for the better," said Djuric.

He emphasized that it is Serbia’s responsibility to find a way to seize this opportunity with President Donald Trump to turn a new page in Serbian-American relations.

According to him, this is a continuation of what President Aleksandar Vucic began with Trump in the early days of his term.

Djuric stated that during the talks, the U.S. Secretary of State clearly conveyed that the personal view of the American president – that he wants better relations with Serbia – is also the stance of the U.S. administration.

"And that tone and atmosphere simply carried over into all the talks we had," Djuric noted.

He said he also spoke with Rubio’s Deputy for Europe, Brandon Hanrahan, covering a wide range of topics, and added that a meeting will follow with the U.S. Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, where he will request help regarding the release of Serbian citizen Alon Ohel, who is in the Gaza Strip.

When asked whether customs duties were discussed with Rubio, Djuric said the topic was touched upon, but that negotiations on tariffs are primarily handled by institutions in the areas of public finance and trade.

He emphasized that it is important for Serbia that American investments continue to come to the country.
