During his address in the crypt of the church, the Patriarch emphasized that the decision was made as an expression of pastoral care and love for the faithful people, who continue to come in large numbers despite the heat and long waiting times.

The extension of the relic’s stay was blessed by Archimandrite Ephraim, abbot of the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos.

The Belt was originally scheduled to remain in Belgrade until May 29th, then its stay was extended until June 1st, and has now been further prolonged until June 5th.

The Holy Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos arrived in Belgrade on May 20th, when it was first displayed at the Ascension Church.

It was later carried through the city streets during the Ascension Day procession and then transferred to the Church of Saint Sava, where believers in enormous lines continue to venerate this great Orthodox holy relic.

It is considered one of the most important relics in the Orthodox Christian world and has been preserved for centuries at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, only very rarely leaving the monastery complex.

According to tradition, the Belt was woven from camel hair by the Virgin Mary herself and handed to the Apostle Thomas during her Assumption.

The relic is divided into three parts and represents a personal belonging of the Mother of God from her earthly life.

Believers hold that the Holy Belt possesses healing powers, and there are numerous testimonies of help received by those who approached it with faith, especially in prayers for health and children.

A large number of worshippers are still expected at the Church of Saint Sava in the coming days.
