Interior Minister Ivica Dacic stated that during the incidents following the May 23 gathering in Belgrade, 17 police officers were injured and 47 individuals were brought to Interior Ministry premises, including one person holding a diplomatic ID card.
Dacic said that the police did not attack anyone until police officers themselves were attacked, adding that no officer wishes to clash with anyone or be hit in the head with a stone, while doing their job.
He stated that the police must intervene when attacked and added that the gathering at Slavija Square had been officially registered, which is why the police took all possible measures.
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic said that cities are environments where creativity, innovation, and the diverse talents of young people are encouraged, and where new ideas and solutions are developed to improve the everyday lives of communities.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the visit to China is of great importance for Serbia and expressed hope that more than 30 agreements and arrangements will be signed.
"The police did everything they could, but there is absolutely no reason for scenes like these to occur. Such scenes can only harm us, even though we see them every day in other parts of the world. Somehow it is considered normal when police act that way elsewhere, but it would supposedly be abnormal here. Forty-seven people were brought in: 15 on criminal charges, 30 for misdemeanors, one based on an arrest warrant, and one person had a diplomatic ID card", the minister said.
The police minister said it had been established that the person with the diplomatic ID card was a representative of the World Bank from Brazil.

He added that eight criminal complaints and 31 misdemeanor charges had been filed, emphasizing that the injury of 17 police officers deserves unequivocal condemnation.
He also stated that since the protests in Serbia began, more than 300 police officers have been injured, and that last year there were 18,893 unregistered public gatherings.
"In 2002, there were only around 500 or 700 such gatherings. We had 18,893. From November 1, 2024, to April 30 of this year, a total of 30,210 public gatherings were held. In total, 363,340 police deployments were recorded, and 326 police officers were injured", Dacic stated.
