Newly Appointed Cardinal Nemet for Newsmax Balkans: Europe Is Open to Serbia Becoming Part of Its Community
Pope Francis has appointed new cardinals, including Belgrade Archbishop Ladislav Nemet, the first in the history of the Catholic Church in Serbia. The archbishop believes that Europe is open to Serbia joining "this great community," emphasizing the cultural closeness between Serbians and Europeans.
"Our goals and lives are somehow more connected with Europe than with the Far East. I worked in Asia and believe that Europeans are closer to us. This is also evident from the fact that, unfortunately, our young people leave the country but head West," Nemet told Newsmax Balkans.
He added that some events in life occur beyond one's control.
"After finishing school in Odzaci, I was pondering my future. Since I regularly attended church, I wanted to become a priest. Just when I was about to submit my application to the bishop of Subotica, my uncle from Italy, a member of the Verbite Order, visited me. He asked what I thought about joining them. I agreed, and the bishop of Subotica accepted me," Nemet recounted in Sinteza.
He completed high school in Subotica in 1975, served in the military, and joined the Verbite Order, also known as the Society of the Divine Word.
"This community, founded in 1875, focuses on missionary work beyond Europe, which is why we are not widely known in the Catholic world. I worked in the Philippines," Nemet said.
Serbian Minister of Culture Nikola Selakovic attended the ceremony at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican as the special envoy of President Aleksandar Vucic, where Pope Francis inducted 21 new cardinals.
"Through Selakovic, the President gifted me a pectoral – a cross worn on the chest. It features a gold-framed Jesus on the cross, crafted using techniques from Greek workshops," Nemet revealed.
