U.S. President Donald Trump announced from the Rose Garden at the White House, on the occasion of Liberation Day, that the United States is imposing a 25% tariff on all cars manufactured outside the country.
"We have some very, very good news today. A lot of good things are happening for our country. This is Liberation Day. April 2, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America's destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to make America wealthy again," President Trump stated.
Speaking about tariffs, he explained that reciprocal tariffs mean the U.S. will impose tariffs on individual countries at approximately half the rate of the tariffs those countries impose on the U.S. For example, the U.S. will impose a 34% tariff on China, as China's tariffs on the U.S. stand at 67%.
A large chart displayed by Trump at the press conference showed that the U.S. will impose tariffs of 20% on the European Union, 10% on the United Kingdom, 46% on Vietnam, 24% on Japan, 26% on India, 25% on South Korea, and 36% on Thailand.
He stated that world leaders seeking exemptions from these reciprocal tariffs must change their trade policies.
The list published by Trump also includes Serbia, which will face a 37% tariff.
