According to his account, before photojournalists and cameramen were allowed to enter the room, an official firearm was discovered on a U.S. Secret Service agent accompanying the American president. As a result, Chinese security personnel did not allow the agent to enter the venue while armed.
Due to the incident, the start of the media entry was delayed by around 20 minutes. The Newsmax Balkans reporter noted that the rest of the event proceeded without any issues.
Following the meeting, which lasted two hours and 15 minutes, Trump and the Chinese hosts continued the program with visits to cultural landmarks included in the official protocol.
What was discussed in the meeting
After the welcoming ceremony, the two delegations held talks in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, seated at a long table alongside Chinese and American flags.
In his opening remarks, Xi Jinping stated that he believes the shared interests of China and the United States outweigh their differences and assessed that the success of one country can represent an opportunity for the other.
During his speech, he also referred to the concept of the Thucydides Trap, a theory in international relations warning of the risk of conflict between a rising power and an established global power, often used in the context of US-China relations.
By doing so, he warned of the risk of escalating tensions between the world’s two largest powers.
Trump is visiting China for the first time since 2017.
