Amid global tensions and the complex relationship between the two world powers, the visit is further underscored by the fact that Newsmax Balkans is the only media outlet from the region accompanying Trump.

Newsmax Balkans journalist Ognjen Medic is reporting directly from Beijing, following this historic visit from the very center of events.

"We arrived in Beijing early this morning together with part of the American media delegation, and it is already evident that China views this visit as an event of enormous political and symbolic significance," Medic said.

He notes that security measures have been raised to the highest level and that the entire city has been adapted to the arrival of the American delegation.

"A large number of international media outlets have been positioned around key locations, and practically the entire protocol is functioning with almost military precision. The hotel we are staying in has been turned into a kind of global press center, from which the world’s largest media organizations are reporting," Medic added.

A historic moment for Newsmax Balkans

The presence of Newsmax Balkans within the American delegation represents a precedent when it comes to media outlets from Serbia and the region.

"For Newsmax Balkans, this is a historic moment. We are the only television crew from Serbia that is part of the U.S. presidential delegation, and the first from the region to cover an official visit to China in this format," Medic emphasized.

Over the coming days, the Newsmax Balkans team will cover all key events from the ceremonial reception of Donald Trump to meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and economic forums.

"We will follow everything - from official meetings and statements by the two leaders to delegation encounters and economic talks. The focus will certainly be on the first direct meeting between Trump and Xi, which is already being viewed here as one of the most important political events of the year," Medic said.

China sends a strong message to the world

According to our reporter, the atmosphere in Beijing clearly shows that the Chinese leadership intends to use this visit to send a global political message.

"It is clearly visible how much importance China places on symbolism and protocol. They want to demonstrate stability, organization, and the strength of a state that sees itself as an equal global leader alongside the United States," Medic explained.

He adds that the significance of the visit is further amplified by current global circumstances.

"We are in a period of serious global instability - from conflicts in the Middle East, through the issue of Iran, to fears of a new economic crisis. That is precisely why every detail of this visit carries far greater weight than before," our reporter emphasized.

Caution and expectations in China

According to him, the Chinese public is following Donald Trump’s arrival with attention, but also with a degree of reserve.

"There is awareness that it was Trump, during his first term, who initiated the trade war with China and imposed tariffs that reshaped relations between the two countries. However, part of the public sees him as a leader who prefers direct deals and personal diplomacy," Medic reports.

This, he adds, opens the space for a certain degree of optimism when it comes to stabilizing relations.

China’s share in total U.S. imports

Key issues of modern geopolitics are expected to dominate the talks - trade, tariffs, Taiwan, Iran, technological development, and artificial intelligence.

"It is expected that both sides will try to find a minimum common ground in order to reduce tensions. Economic cooperation is especially important, as neither the United States nor China currently wants additional destabilization of the global market. Data shows that China’s share in total U.S. imports has significantly declined - from over 20% in 2018 to around 9% in 2025. At the same time, the U.S. trade deficit with China has decreased by more than 30% and is now at its lowest level since 2005, but this has not meant the end of China’s economic dominance. In the meantime, China has increased exports to Europe, Southeast Asia, and countries of the Global South, and has even achieved a record trade surplus," Medic pointed out.

In conclusion, our reporter assesses that this visit goes beyond a classic diplomatic framework.

"This is not just a bilateral meeting between two leaders. This is a meeting that could influence the global economy, energy stability, and international relations in the years to come," the Newsmax Balkans correspondent in Washington reminded.
