European Commissioner for Enlargement: EU Expects Concrete Anti-Corruption Results from Serbia

Referring to her recent visit to Belgrade, where she met with political leaders, civil society organizations, and students, Kos said she delivered a consistent message: that the time for EU enlargement is now and that this is a historic opportunity. However, she added, the EU expects concrete results from Serbia in the fight against corruption, ensuring the rule of law, judicial independence, media freedom, and electoral reforms that will restore citizens’ trust in the system.

As a "key step toward restoring trust," Kos highlighted the selection of members of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM), stressing that all relevant stakeholders must be involved in the process.

She noted that EU membership brings benefits but also responsibilities and a commitment to shared values, including foreign policy alignment. "You cannot continue engaging with Russia as if nothing has happened," she said.

Kos also underscored the importance of dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and the need for constructive regional policies.

European Parliament rapporteur for Serbia, Tonino Picula, presented a report on Serbia, noting that the collapse of the roof canopy at the Novi Sad railway station – which resulted in the deaths of 16 people – has become a symbol of corruption, nepotism, and inadequate oversight mechanisms that should be protecting citizens.
