Floods That United the Region – 11 Years Since the Deluge

The floods in the Balkans followed heavy rainfall and a powerful cyclone that hit the central part of the peninsula.

Cyclone Tamara struck Central and Southeastern Europe on May 13, 2014.

The center of the cyclone was over Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where between May 13 and 15 an extraordinary amount of rainfall occurred – the highest ever recorded since meteorological observations began.

In Serbia, the town of Obrenovac was the hardest hit. Nearly 90 percent of the municipality was submerged, 17 people lost their lives, and over 25,000 were evacuated from their homes.

According to data from the Ministry of Interior, 57 people died in the floods that hit Serbia between May 13 and 27.

In Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the floods of that year destroyed 100,000 homes and over 200 schools, while the equivalent of a three-month average of rainfall fell in just three days.
