The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) has taken steps to align its payment systems and regulations with European Union (EU) standards, the statement said.
Serbia now becomes the 41st country to join SEPA, marking a significant step on its path toward EU integration.
As economist Veljko Mijuskovic explained to Newsmax Balkans, this development brings dual benefits.
"On the one hand, intermediary banks that were previously required are now avoided, reducing fees, which are now aligned with the costs of standard euro transfer orders. Additionally, the time required is reduced to one business day. On the other hand, there is also the so-called SEPA Instant option, which allows euro transfers to be completed within seconds," Mijuskovic noted.
Finance Minister Sinisa Mali emphasized that the practical implementation of SEPA in Serbia is expected to begin in May 2026.
