European Union Includes "Jadar" in List of Strategic Projects

The list, presented by European Commission Vice-President Stefan Sezurne, includes 13 projects involving the exploitation of nickel, graphite, lithium, and other raw materials in countries such as Canada, Norway, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Zambia, Brazil, South Africa, Malawi, the United Kingdom, Madagascar, Greenland, and New Caledonia. These strategic projects aim to diversify the EU's supply sources and enhance economic security, while also promoting the creation of local value in third countries.

The European Commission emphasizes that this initiative complements the list of 47 strategic projects within the EU, adopted on March 25. The goal is to contribute to the competitiveness of the EU industry, particularly in sectors like electromobility, renewable energy, defense, and aerospace.

The Commission further notes that independent experts have assessed these strategic projects to ensure they meet the criteria established by the Critical Raw Materials Act, concerning environmental, social, and governance standards, as well as technical feasibility. Selected projects must be mutually beneficial for both the EU and third countries and will receive coordinated support from the Commission, member states, and financial institutions, including facilitation of access to financing and connections with relevant buyers.

The EU estimates that initiating operations for these 13 strategic projects outside the EU will require a total capital investment of €5.5 billion.

Rio Tinto has welcomed the European Commission's decision to designate the "Jadar" project as a strategic project under the Critical Raw Materials Act.
