The 41 member states include all 27 European Union countries, as well as countries of the European Economic Area (Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein), Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, the Vatican, Albania, Montenegro, Moldova, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

Serbia officially became the 41st member of SEPA in May last year, allowing non-cash euro payments to be conducted under favorable and standardized conditions across all member states of this payment area.

These changes will significantly facilitate and accelerate money transfers and reduce transaction costs both from Serbia to abroad and from abroad to Serbia.

A Significant Step in Further Modernization of Payment Services

Accession to the SEPA system represents an important part of Serbia’s broader European integration process and further alignment of its domestic financial system with the legal and institutional framework of the European Union.

The National Bank of Serbia plays a key role in this process - both as a participant in SEPA payment schemes and as a supervisory authority overseeing and coordinating the accession of commercial banks in Serbia to the SEPA system, ensuring compliance with all regulatory, technical, and operational standards.

As the state’s central bank, the National Bank of Serbia enables direct and indirect budget users to conduct euro-denominated payment transactions more efficiently and cost-effectively, while also facilitating easier integration into European financial flows.

Accession to the SEPA system marks a significant step toward further modernization of payment services and alignment with the best European standards and practices.
