Marina Maljkovic Steps Down as Women’s Basketball Head Coach After 14 Years
The long-time head coach of the Serbian women’s national basketball team, Marina Maljkovic, has mutually agreed to terminate her contract with the Basketball Federation of Serbia (KSS) after 14 years of cooperation, including a one-year break in 2017.
As a result, the Serbian women’s basketball team will begin the new European Championship qualification cycle with a new head coach, KSS announced.
“A completely new qualification cycle for EuroBasket 2027 is beginning, as well as a new multi-year chapter for the Serbian women’s national team. I’m not entitled to the position of head coach forever, and I believe it’s time for new people to be given a chance from the very start,” said Marina Maljkovic.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the European Parliament adopted a resolution on Serbia with fewer votes than before, emphasizing that this shows they are losing popularity and strength in their fight against Serbia.
She emphasized that she is currently focusing all her knowledge and energy on building a strong Serbian club that can compete in European tournaments and serve as support for the national team in the coming years.
“The improvement in the quality of competition in the national league is already noticeable, and new players for the national team will emerge from it. I hope that growth will continue,” said Maljkovic, expressing gratitude to the KSS, her colleagues, and especially the players for their successful cooperation.
“I wish the national team great success in future competitions,” she added.
