"Option number one is that the U.S. grants permission to operate, a license, or withdraws sanctions against Russian entities, which is unlikely to happen. I won’t talk about the exact percentage, but let’s say less than 10 percent. Then I hope - and this is much more likely - that the Russians will sell the majority of shares in the Petroleum Industry of Serbia to some of their partners, and it doesn’t matter where that company comes from. I hope they will do that. And number three, which I hope will not happen, is that we will have to act as a state, and that will happen 37 days from now - January 15th is the deadline", Vucic said at the panel "European Competitiveness in a Fragmented Geopolitical Environment".
He emphasized that everyone must understand that January 15th is the final deadline and that there will be no extension, and that fuel supply for Serbia’s citizens and economy must not be threatened.
American diplomat Christopher Hill claims that former President of Serbia and the FRY Slobodan Milosevic was willing to compromise only in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, but never over Kosovo and Metohija.
The Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, stated that Serbia has enough fuel oil for the entire heating season and told citizens not to worry and to trust the state.
He added that some say Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina do not have refineries and "survive", but that Serbia cannot do without the Pancevo Refinery.
"We are a much larger country than Bosnia and Slovenia, we cannot survive without a refinery. 10.3 percent comes from the refinery, and it’s not just 10.3 percent - it’s a large part of the budget", Vucic said.
Vucic stated that he expects news from Moscow on reaching a short-term gas supply agreement, and that if there is no such agreement, Serbia will immediately diversify its supply sources.
