The Minister without portfolio for gender equality, prevention of violence against women, and economic and political empowerment of women, Tatjana Macura, stated at the "Equal, Safe, Empowered" conference that one in five girls in Serbia has experienced violence.
Of those, 74% did not feel confident enough to report such experiences to institutions or family.
She also pointed out another alarming statistic: in the past decade, over 400 women have been killed in Serbia, based on media reports alone, and only 3% of these women had previously reported the violence.
Macura emphasized that the conference aims to convey the message that building a violence-free society is a top priority. She underscored that the country’s institutions are there to support all women and girls who are victims of violence and to provide a robust response to such cases. She added that the increased public discourse on violence in Serbia today does not necessarily mean that violence has increased.
President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the number of cases of violence against women is decreasing and reiterated his political demand for the Serbian government to adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward perpetrators of violence against women.
"One of my political demands to the Government of Serbia will be zero tolerance for those who have committed violence against women or are under any suspicion of having done so. This means there is no place for such individuals in high-ranking public positions," Vucic stressed.
Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dacic emphasized the importance of reporting violence and encouraging victims to come forward. He also noted that society must work together systematically to address this issue.
He added that preventing violence is a police priority, and two new criminal offenses have been introduced into the law to combat domestic violence.
