"Operation Storm Was a Pogrom – We Will Remember Forever": 30th Anniversary of the Expulsion of Serbs from Croatia

As announced, the event featured speeches from Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik, and a memorial service for the victims was held by Patriarch Porfirije.

President Vucic paid tribute to the enduring strength of the Krajina Serbs and thanked them for always standing by Serbia.

“Krajina children live in a free country where people can breathe, speak, and bear Serbian names,” the President added.

To recall, the attack on the then Republic of Serbian Krajina began at dawn on August 4, 1995, with heavy artillery and rocket fire.

The Croatian army, with support from units of the Croatian Defence Council and the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, carried out Operation Storm, the largest military offensive in the Balkans since World War II.

Within just a few days, resistance was crushed, and more than 200,000 Serbs were expelled from their homes and more than 1,900 killed.

Only three individuals – two in Croatia and one in Bosnia and Herzegovina – have been convicted for crimes committed against Serbs during and after Operation Storm.

In a 2015 ruling, the International Court of Justice classified Operation Storm as ethnic cleansing but did not designate it as genocide.
