At the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, held at the Hilton hotel in Washington and attended by U.S. President Donald Trump, an armed man fired several shots, prompting the immediate evacuation of everyone present.

This was the third incident and attack involving Trump in the past two years. According to Newsmax Balkans’ Washington correspondent, after the shots were fired, the Secret Service responded quickly and evacuated all attendees.

"The shooting occurred 15 minutes after the President of the United States arrived at the Hilton hotel dinner. Trump was immediately taken away and returned to the White House. What exactly happened during the night remains unclear to almost everyone. The attacker ran past the Secret Service officers securing the event and fired several shots. What we have learned so far is that the attacker was carrying multiple weapons at the time – two to three knives, according to officials, as well as a rifle and several handguns," said Ognjen Medic.

Following the incident, attention turned to how the attacker managed to breach security at one of Washington’s most anticipated and heavily guarded annual events, and where a possible lapse in Secret Service operations may have occurred.

According to available information, the suspect was staying at the same hotel where the dinner was taking place. Police and prosecutors stated that multiple weapons were found in his possession, including two to three knives, one rifle, and several handguns.

He was taken into custody, after which police searched his apartment.

Motive for the Attack

President Donald Trump addressed the public after the incident, stating that the attacker had been apprehended and that police had searched his apartment in California. He described the suspect as “a very sick person” and emphasized that such events must never be allowed to happen.

“We do not want things like this to happen,” the U.S. president said.

The suspect in the shooting at the Hilton hotel in Washington has no criminal record and was not previously on law enforcement’s radar, according to a U.S. official.
