In the 21st century, according to all criteria, Serbia has been categorized among the demographically oldest countries in the world. Currently, one in five Serbian residents is over 65 years old, while only one in seven is under 15. The median age has reached a record high of about 43 years.
Statistics show that since 2011, the population has decreased by slightly over half a million.
"Only Belgrade's population is growing. It has a positive migration balance but no natural population growth. Other areas with a positive balance include Vojvodina, the South Banat region, Sumadija, and Srem, while 50 municipalities have a negative balance," Santic explained.
Between 2011 and 2022, 180,000 young and educated people left Serbia, according to statistical data.
Professor Santic stressed that this figure is not entirely reliable but noted that a significant number of young people have left Serbia.
"We cannot stop migration, but we must create conditions for them to return and apply the knowledge and skills gained abroad, bringing new ideas and perspectives," said Santic.
