Eight people lost their lives, and seven were injured in a fire at a nursing home in Veliki Borak, in the Belgrade municipality of Barajevo. Thirteen residents were evacuated.
Arson is suspected, according to the Chief Public Prosecutor of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, Nenad Stefanovic.
He added that there is reasonable suspicion that the fire was started by one of the home’s residents, who also perished in the incident.
The fire in the nursing home broke out at 3:32 a.m., and firefighters arrived at the scene at 3:45 a.m. to find the fire in a fully developed stage, spreading across 150 square meters of the building’s total 500 square meters.
A total of 32 firefighters and rescuers were engaged in the search and rescue operation.
Sladjana Markovic, Acting Assistant Minister for Social Protection, told Newsmax Balkans that the home had all the necessary licenses and was equipped with fire protection measures.
