On March 12, 2003, Djindjic was shot on the steps in front of the Serbian Government building as he arrived for work. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM, and Djindjic was quickly transported to the Emergency Center. Approximately an hour after being shot, the then-Prime Minister of Serbia passed away on the operating table.
At the time, the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament, Natasa Micic, declared a state of emergency, while the Government of Serbia proclaimed three days of national mourning.
Zoran Djindjic was laid to rest in the Alley of Distinguished Citizens at the New Cemetery in Belgrade three days later, with full military honors.
The mastermind behind the assassination, former commander of the Special Operations Unit (JSO) Milorad Ulemek, along with his deputy and direct perpetrator of the murder, Zvezdan Jovanovic, were both sentenced to the maximum penalty of 40 years in prison.
However, although a verdict has been reached for the direct perpetrators of the assassination, the political background of the murder remains undisclosed to this day.
