Prosecutor’s Office Orders Investigation into Loud Sound That Caused Panic at Protest
The First Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade has launched an investigation and instructed the police to determine what exactly happened during Saturday’s protest when a loud and unusual sound caused panic, prompting people to run, push, and fall on King Milan Street.
The Prosecutor's Office stated that it is necessary to determine whether pyrotechnic devices, firearms, or any other hazardous means were used that could have endangered the lives and safety of the citizens gathered at the protest in Belgrade.
Additionally, authorities have been directed to verify whether any citizens were injured and, if so, to obtain medical documentation detailing the type and severity of their injuries.
Once the full and accurate facts are established, the Prosecutor’s Office will decide whether the actions of the currently unidentified individuals constitute the criminal offense of Endangering Public Safety under Article 278 of the Criminal Code or another criminal offense subject to official prosecution.
A student protest called "15th for 15" is being held in Belgrade, with the highest state officials appealing for everything to proceed peacefully and without incidents.
University of Novi Sad students, who are participating in the blockade, stated that illegal weaponry known as a "sound cannon" was used at the protest.
The extended Rector’s Collegium of the University of Belgrade issued a statement demanding an urgent and transparent investigation, accountability for those responsible, and clear assurances that all citizens will be able to exercise their right to peaceful assembly without fear of violence.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs refuted claims circulating on social media that a "sound cannon" was deployed on the terrace of the Presidency, asserting that the photographs in question actually depict an anti-drone rifle.
The Emergency Center strongly denied speculative reports that were disseminated publicly and on social media alleging that dozens of people had been treated there on Saturday for symptoms allegedly caused by the use of a "sound cannon."
