The debate on Serbia’s political situation will not be included in the agenda for the European Parliament's April plenary session, despite concerns over the use of sound weapons during a peaceful protest on March 15 in Belgrade.
This decision was made during a meeting of the coordinators of political groups in the European Parliament.
The proposal to include this issue in the discussion was submitted by the liberal and green groups, supported by the Social Democrats and the Left, while the European People's Party (EPP) and far-right groups opposed it.
Previously, MEPs from the EPP, whose affiliated member is the Serbian Progressive Party, refused to sign a letter sent by 33 MEPs to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, expressing concern over her meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic amid the political crisis in Serbia.
In February, when the European Parliament held a debate on Serbia’s political crisis, the EPP group also opposed adopting a resolution following the discussion.
Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic stated that last night the United States sent a negative message concerning the Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) and unambiguously indicated in response to the company’s request that they want a complete change of ownership of the Russian shareholders.
