The number of foreigners who moved to Serbia in 2023 is nine and a half times greater than just over a decade ago, according to a study presented by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (SORS).
According to experts, these migration trends could partially improve Serbia's bleak demographic outlook.
Namely, SORS presented the study “Immigration of Foreigners into the Republic of Serbia”, which shows that the number of foreigners who immigrated to Serbia in 2023 was 41,273.
Acting Director of SORS, Branko Josipovic, stated at the presentation of the study results that this immigration data is the first step toward enabling decision-makers, as well as all relevant institutions in Serbia, to understand the impact of immigration on the country.
“We wanted to track this important phenomenon because, over the last decade, the immigration of foreign nationals to Serbia has intensified significantly. The study was created in accordance with European and international standards, which simplifies data comparison. The plan is to conduct a more detailed study on who is moving to Serbia, as well as to establish research on emigration, in order to complete the picture of migration flows,” said Josipovic.
Head of the Department for Demography and Health Statistics, Gordana Bjelobrk, noted that this is the first time SORS has published such statistics and that the study is the result of cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to her, the highest growth rate in the number of foreigners – almost 13.5 times in 2023 compared to 2012 – was recorded in Vojvodina. The Belgrade region ranked second with a tenfold increase, while other regions reported a sixfold growth.
She emphasized that nearly two-thirds of the foreigners who immigrated to Serbia between 2012 and 2023 were men, while women made up only one-third.
Bjelobrk added that the average age of an immigrant in Serbia is about 33 years, with Russian citizens being the most numerous.
