(VIDEO) Drecun: Trump Could Offer New Solutions for Kosovo and Metohija, He Wants to Resolve the Issue in This Term
Member of Parliament Milovan Drecun expects the administration in Washington to "push things forward" regarding the Kosovo issue and places his hopes in U.S. President Donald Trump to offer "some new solutions."
He spoke on the morning program of Newsmax Balkans about the ongoing parliamentary crisis in Kosovo and Metohija, which Pristina has been unable to resolve for two months.
In that context, Drecun, who is also the chairman of the parliamentary Committee for Defense and Internal Affairs, commented on the new prospects for negotiations regarding the status of the Serbian province, given that the Brussels dialogue has been stagnating for 12 years.
"The key unilateral action by the U.S. was the recognition of Kosovo’s independence. As long as you are biased toward one side and aim to realize their strategic goal, you completely disregard the interests of the other side. There can be no progress in such a situation, and the Kosovo issue cannot be resolved that way. That’s why I believe that if President Trump decides at some point to resolve this issue during his second term, he will have to offer some new solutions," Drecun said.
“A Cemented Position, But…”
He stated that Trump’s position is “cemented,” which he recently observed at the Security Council, as the "U.S. representative said they expect the dialogue to end with mutual recognition."

However, Drecun has somewhat different expectations from the head of the White House.
"For the USA, Kosovo is a state, but precisely in that interpretation of mutual recognition, there is a lot of maneuvering and negotiating with Trump. So, I expect that Trump, unlike the Europeans, will try to push things forward. Simply, his approach to politics is like that. We see that he raises his expectations to the maximum when he negotiates something, and then returns to something that is realistic. We have to be ready for that situation and that's why our communication with the Trump administration is very important, with him, with his associates," explains Drecun.
Chances for the Kosovo Opposition
He also commented on the current situation in Kosovo and Metohija regarding the formation of a parliamentary majority, which Self-Determination (Vetëvendosje), led by the recently ousted Prime Minister Albin Kurti, has been unable to achieve for some time.
"If you do the math based on the number of mandates, it seems to me that—considering the two rounds of voting that have taken place—the opposition could form a majority. In what format that majority would take, and who would actually form it, is another question. But don’t forget that there are 20 representatives from non-majority communities, including nine from the Serbian List. In this almost deadlocked situation among Albanian parties, they have decisive importance and carry significant weight. So, the key issue now is who will persuade whom to take their side. But I think the opposition can, at least numerically, form a majority now. Whether Kurti will continue using various maneuvers to delay the opposition’s chance to secure a majority—remains to be seen," the Newsmax Balkans interviewee stated.
