Process Initiated for Selection of REM Council Members, Students End RTS Blockade
The Committee for Culture and Information of the National Assembly of Serbia has adopted a decision to initiate the procedure for proposing candidates for the selection of members of the Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM).
Fifteen out of sixteen present members of the Committee voted in favor of the decision. The one remaining member who was present at the session abstained from voting.
Prior to that, the Committee also unanimously voted to revoke the previous decision from November last year regarding the initiation of the same procedure.
Since Monday evening, students participating in a blockade have been obstructing the entrances to the buildings of Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) in Belgrade, while the blockade of Radio Television of Vojvodina (RTV) in Novi Sad has been lifted.
Last week, opposition members of the Committee for Culture and Information called for an urgent session to annul the previous decision and begin a new process for selecting REM Council members, which was adopted on the same day, and the session was scheduled.
The REM Council consists of nine members. The previous members' terms expired on November 5, 2024. On November 23, the Assembly Committee adopted a decision to announce a call for candidates for the REM Council. In January of this year, seven candidates withdrew their candidacies.
It is worth noting that the selection of REM Council members was one of the key demands of students who, since April 14, had blocked all entrances to the buildings of Radio Television of Serbia (RTS). Following yesterday’s decision by the Committee for Culture and Information, the blockade was lifted.
