Cardinal Ladislav Nemet Becomes the First Elector in a Conclave in the History of the Catholic Church in Serbia

Nemet was elevated to the rank of cardinal on December 7, 2024, during a consistory held at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, becoming the first cardinal in the Church’s history in Serbia.

He is among the cardinals appointed by Pope Francis and is considered within Church circles to belong to the more open and inclusive wing of the College of Cardinals.

According to the website of the Archdiocese of Belgrade, international media have mentioned Cardinal Nemet as being among the potential candidates for pope.

The conclave to elect the 267th pope of the Catholic Church will begin on Wednesday, with the election taking place in secrecy within the Sistine Chapel.
