Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia: Tangible Results in Rule of Law Needed to Open Cluster 3
Head of the European Union Delegation in Serbia, Andreas von Beckerath, stated in a meeting with Minister for European Integration Nemanja Starovic that the opening of Cluster 3 in the EU accession negotiations depends on tangible and sustainable progress in the area of rule of law.
He highlighted electoral reforms and respect for freedom of expression, as well as the appointment of a credible Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media, as areas where tangible progress is particularly expected.
According to the statement from the Delegation, Von Beckerath emphasized that the EU is closely monitoring the challenging political situation in Serbia, including in the context of EU accession negotiations.
He underlined that the accession process provides a solid framework for addressing key issues – from strengthening the rule of law and safeguarding media freedom, to improving electoral conditions and fostering an enabling environment for civil society.

Von Beckerath reiterated the need to respect fundamental rights, including the right to peaceful assembly.
“This also entails avoiding any violence against political opponents and the premises of political parties as a means of political protest,” Von Beckerath stated.
He stressed that police actions must be proportionate and consistent with fundamental rights, and that any suspicion of excessive use of force must be properly investigated, including concerning reports of threats and violence against journalists.
