Vucic: Horrific terrorist attack in front of the National Assembly

"This was a horrific terrorist attack targeting other people and property, carried out by Vladan A., born in 1955, who created general danger," said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic at an emergency press conference.

As he noted, this was his legal interpretation of the act as a lawyer, while the official legal qualification will be provided by the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office.

He added that the arrested man is registered as living in the Belgrade municipality of Stari Grad, but actually resides in Banovo Brdo, and that he had worked for 16 years in the former State Security Service.

"It’s very important to note that this person owns a Crvena Zastava M99 pistol registered since 1993. He returned another pistol of the same model, but with a different serial number, in 2018 during our first campaign for citizens to hand in weapons. Since 2018, he also owned a Melior pistol, an old trophy weapon. He has been a pensioner since 2009," Vucic said, providing details about the man who fired shots in the tent and who was carrying a can of gasoline.

Milan Bogdanovic was shot, Vucic said, and "immediately fell down."

"He wanted to enter the tent to see what the person who shot him was doing. He wasn’t injured by the gas cylinder, but by a bullet," Vucic explained. During the address, a video from the scene was shown, as well as the suspect’s statement, in which he said he didn’t know the people present but wanted the police to kill him because, as he said, he could no longer live.

"I tried to pour gasoline inside the tent, but since I couldn’t, I fired bullets into the gasoline can, and then in the direction of the man who approached me (Bogdanovic)," the suspect said in the arrest video shown at the conference.

In the video, Vladan A. claimed that no one sent him, that he didn’t know anyone staying in the tents, and denied having any mental illness.

He said he wanted to set the tents on fire because he was "annoyed that they were set up in the city center," and that he fired shots intending to provoke the police to kill him because, as he said, he could no longer live.
