Music Star Yasmin Levy Finds a New Home: I Am Totally Serbian Now and I Will Learn the Serbian Language
World-renowned music star Yasmin Levy, known for her unique blend of Sephardic tradition, flamenco, and Mediterranean sound, has been living in Serbia for over two and a half years, a country she now considers her new home.
During an appearance on Newsmax Balkans, Levy shared why Serbia has become her source of inspiration, how her songs come to life, and why, in her words, the audience in Novi Sad "shares the same sorrow as I do."
Her concert in the city is scheduled for December 4.
"I was in Novi Sad and realized they have the same sorrow that I carry. We connected through that sorrow, which is why I think they understand my music. On stage, I feel completely free – you must have a deep sorrow in your heart to understand it. I’m looking forward to the concert; I’m coming with a new band from Serbia and I can’t wait to share my new songs," said the music star.
Levy, who has been living in Serbia for over two and a half years, revealed that she is learning Serbian.
"Of course I’m learning Serbian. I’ve always learned languages on my own – French, Spanish, English. Thanks to my ear, I imitate languages as I do music," the artist said with a smile.
Asked whether Serbian seems difficult to her, she honestly admitted:
"Yes, unfortunately it does. But I will overcome it."
Last year, she obtained Serbian citizenship, and today she says, "I am totally Serbian now."
"I’ve traveled all over the world – Greece, Spain, the United Kingdom – but I never thought I would leave my country. Yet when I came to Serbia, I immediately felt at home. Now I’m here with my children, they go to school, and I feel free," Yasmin said.
She lives in Belgrade, a city she considers her true home.
"I came from Israel and always felt like a nomad without a country. That’s why many people couldn’t understand my music. But here, people immediately understood – if you understand my music, you have actually accepted me. I am my music. That’s why I found my home here and can finally settle down."
Asked what audiences can expect from her performances, Levy responded simply:
"Honesty. Love. Sorrow. I share my private, personal life. It’s harder for me to talk one-on-one than to sing in front of five thousand people. The stage is my place of freedom, where my voice protects me from the evils of humanity. I am grateful to the audience because they make me feel loved and protected."
