Is There Solution to Truckers’ Problems: "EU Stubbornly Sticks to Rules, Blockades Stem from Transporters’ Desperation"
Bojan Stanic, Assistant Director of the Sector for Strategic Analysis, Services and Internationalization at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS), believes that the European Union administration is being stubborn regarding the EU’s border Entry/Exit System, even though an exception could be made.
The new Entry/Exit System at EU borders (the EES system), which also affects Serbian citizens – especially transport operators – began to be implemented in mid-October last year.
Traditional passport stamps for entry into and exit from the European Union were supposed to become a thing of the past in April, but as Stanic told Newsmax Balkans, there will be no extension of the deadline or exceptions.
The war in the Middle East and rising regional tensions have once again raised questions about the role of the U.S.–Israel alliance, the military aid Washington provides to Tel Aviv, and the future balance of power in the region.
The war in the Middle East currently dominates the global political agenda and raises the question of whether Western attention could shift away from Ukraine, said Andrew D’Anieri, Deputy Director of the Eurasia Center at the Atlantic Council in Washington, in an interview with Newsmax Balkans.
“I believe the EU could make an exception, given that 90% of transport from our region to EU countries is carried out by trucks. However, they are stubbornly sticking to their rules”, Stanic said.
The damage is not borne only by transport operators – truck drivers from the Balkans – but also by the EU economy, whose companies depend on imported raw materials from our region.
It should be recalled that Balkan drivers protested and blocked border crossings for freight traffic because of this new system.
Asked why importers from the EU remain silent and why they do not increase pressure on European institutions when their own economic interests are also at risk, Stanic replied that importers have not been silent, but that the situation is such that our economy depends more on the EU than the other way around.
“The blockades arose more out of the desperation of entrepreneurs. Nevertheless, the protests have significantly affected manufacturing companies, given that if blockades occur one after another, those companies are no longer considered reliable suppliers in, for example, Germany. That is why Germany is gradually beginning to consider more reliable suppliers. I hope there will be no further blockades”, Stanic concluded.
