Paunovic at the UN: Serbia Has Significantly Improved the Status and Protection of Women Over the Past Two Decades
Serbia’s Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Snezana Paunovic, stated in New York at the United Nations that Serbia has significantly improved the social status and protection of women over the past two decades.
She also emphasized that it is the shared responsibility of all to build inclusive and fair systems so that every woman and girl knows she is not alone, that the law is on her side, and that justice will be attainable. Not as a privilege, but as a guaranteed right.
Speaking on Tuesday at the general debate during the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, where one of the key values of every democratic society was discussed, namely access to justice available to all women and girls without exception, without fear and without barriers, through the promotion of inclusive and fair legal systems and the elimination of discriminatory laws, policies, and practices, Paunovic also reminded participants that a society that does not protect its most vulnerable members cannot be either just or sustainable.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, spoke by phone with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, about the current situation in the Middle East, emphasizing that de-escalation, responsibility, and dialogue are necessary to preserve stability in the wider region.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, stated that the government will send Air Serbia planes to bring back Serbian citizens from the Middle East who wish to evacuate, as soon as the airspace in that region opens for civilian flights.
Emphasizing that Serbia has significantly improved the social position and protection of women over the past two decades, Paunovic noted that thanks to this proactive approach, more than one-third of ministers in the current government are women.
“Women also hold nearly half of the leadership positions. At the same time, they make up more than half of employees in the public sector,” Paunovic added, noting that she is leading the Serbian delegation at the United Nations.
Serbia, Minister Paunovic emphasized, is also a signatory to a number of international conventions, agreements, and documents related to gender equality, the prohibition of discrimination, and the protection of women’s rights, including all relevant conventions of the United Nations and the Council of Europe, such as the Beijing Declaration and the Istanbul Convention.
