Montenegrin Minister of Justice: I do not expect Serbia to extradite Marovic, we will no longer send requests
Montenegro will not send new requests to Serbia for the extradition of Svetozar Marovic, said Montenegrin Minister of Justice Bojan Bozovic in the Newsmax Balkans program Dijagnoza.
Bozovic believes that Serbia will not extradite Marovic, but states that the responsibility for why the former high-ranking official is in that country lies primarily with Montenegro, because after his sentence was handed down, he was effectively allowed to leave the country without obstacles.
After admitting that he was the leader of a criminal group, Marovic, upon being released from six months of detention in May 2016, went to Belgrade instead of serving his sentence, reportedly for treatment of depression, according to his defense.
He has since been in the Serbian capital, which has refused to extradite him despite numerous requests.
According to data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS), 204,278 foreigners visited Serbia in October, and by country of origin, the most numerous were visitors from China, with 20,566 arrivals.
President of Serbia and member of the Presidency of the Serbian Progressive Party, Aleksandar Vucic, stated that the SNS achieved a convincing victory in local elections in Negotin, Mionica, and Secanj, thanked the citizens, and emphasized that the people understood fighting for Serbia’s interests.
Although he had previously said that it made no sense to send new extradition requests to Serbia, Bozovic did so in May 2025.
He said that Montenegro has excellent cooperation with Serbia in similar cases, but that this does not apply to Marovic.
"But I would like, and truly hope, that we will get answers as to who is responsible for allowing Marovic to leave Montenegro. As Minister of Justice, that is what interests me the most. And whether the Serbian Minister of Justice will extradite Marovic is very important to me, but that is exclusively within Serbia’s jurisdiction," Bozovic said.
