First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali stated that major construction works on the Belgrade metro stations are expected to begin this year and announced that the first metro line will be completed by 2030.
Speaking to Tanjug, Mali said that tunnel boring machines (TBMs), known as "moles", are expected to arrive in Serbia in the second half of the year.
The first metro line will connect Zeleznik and Mirijevo, the second line is planned along the Bezanija-Mirijevo route, while the third line will connect Banjica and Bezanija.
He added that a contract has been signed for the design and construction of the first metro line with the French company Alstom, which is responsible for electromechanical works and the production of metro trainsets, noting that the contract is worth approximately one billion euros.
"The contract is worth as much as one billion euros, and in my view this was the final contract, the last legal step that needed to be completed", Mali said.
Mali also stated that the design for the second metro line has been completed and that construction is expected to begin in 2027 or, at the latest, in 2028.

AutorThe minister noted that the Belgrade metro project has been delayed due to the extensive geomechanical and geological studies required.
"We are behind schedule, but not through our own fault. The project has been delayed simply because when you are undertaking such a major and responsible project, it is necessary to carry out all possible geomechanical and geological studies, and so on. Since the first line is 21 kilometers long, if I am not mistaken, and the second 25 kilometers, significantly more time was needed for this", he added.
A thematic session of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, at which key issues of strategic importance for Serbia will be discussed, will be held on Sunday, January 25th.
