At the ceremonial event announcing the names, he said that around 100.000 votes were cast for the proposed mascot names.
In September, three pairs of names remained in the final round: Rastko and Milica, Sava and Nada, and Momcilo and Tamara, and citizens were given additional time to vote. Due to strong public interest and a constant influx of votes, the deadline for selecting the names of the EXPO 2027 Belgrade mascots was extended.
The name Rastko symbolizes growth, progress, and innovation, which are the central themes of the exhibition itself, while the name Milica represents warmth, kindness, and harmony, values that Serbia wishes to promote as a host country that brings people together.
Both names are well known in Serbian history, Rastko Nemanjic and Princess Milica, further linking the mascots, which wear traditional folk costumes, to the country’s cultural identity.
