Activists and citizens gathered at the site to try to prevent the commencement of works. The "Kreni-Promeni" ("Begin-Change") movement announced that its leader, Savo Manojlovic, and their city councilor, Aleksandar Jovanovic, were detained.

Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dacic stated that Manojlovic and another individual attempted to breach the police cordon, prompting the police response.

As a sign of protest, activists blocked Branko's Bridge at noon for 45 minutes before returning to the Old Sava Bridge.

Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic described the blockade of Branko's Bridge during a workday as "the last straw" and urged the police and law enforcement agencies to take all necessary actions within their authority to prevent "continuous harassment of Belgrade residents and obstruction of daily life."

Despite opposition from some residents and years of delays, the Old Sava Bridge in Belgrade was closed to traffic on November 1.

The Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure issued a construction permit in October for the construction of a new Sava Bridge.
