As of November 25, 2024, preliminary investigations by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) revealed that at least 137 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza, Israel, and Lebanon since the beginning of the war. This marks the deadliest period for journalists since the CPJ began recording data in 1992.
"Unfortunately, we are witnessing many European societies turning a blind eye and remaining silent about the horrific suffering of civilians and journalists in that region. I find this appalling. These are people just like us who happened to be in the wrong place and have been enduring months of severe crimes against them," Sever stated.
The EFJ has been consistently organizing aid for journalists in Ukraine in collaboration with unions and other international organizations.
"Six solidarity centers have been opened, where we regularly send various forms of aid, whether it’s bulletproof vests, equipment for journalists, or protective gear. We’re also working with them on safety training and maintaining daily solidarity not only regarding war reporting but also their parallel struggles for media pluralism, democracy, and free media in Ukraine," Sever added.
She stressed the need for legislative changes at the national level to expedite implementation and improve media freedom indexes in Europe and globally.
