U.S. Embassy: Russian Owners of NIS Use Part of the Profits for Aggression, Not for Investing in Serbia's Future
Regarding the announcement that the United States may impose sanctions on the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS), the U.S. Embassy could not comment on the news but emphasized that the risks of cooperating with Russian companies, especially in the energy sector, have been well-known for a long time.
In a response to Euronews Serbia, the U.S. Embassy in Serbia highlighted that NIS is a national resource for Serbia, but Russian owners are using part of the profits to fund the aggression against Ukraine.
"NIS is a valuable national resource for Serbia, which was worth more than two billion dollars in 2008, when Gazprom bought more than half of its shares for a small portion of their market value. It is now the most profitable company in Serbia. Russian owners of NIS are using their share of the profits to finance the brutal aggression against Ukraine and threaten stability in the Balkans and across Europe, rather than investing in Serbia's future," stated the U.S. Embassy.
President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, stated that the United States will impose comprehensive sanctions on the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS) in a few days due to its Russian ownership
They emphasized that a change in ownership of NIS would certainly bring more peace and prosperity, both in Serbia and in the region.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with Serbia to diversify its energy sources and achieve energy independence, ensuring that it benefits Serbia, not an aggressive and destabilizing foreign power.
Following reports that the U.S. would impose sanctions on NIS starting January 1, the company issued a statement saying it is monitoring the current situation and analyzing all possible scenarios.
