Ana Brnabic: Tensions have been ongoing since the May tragedies, I am concerned that protests may turn into anarchism
Tensions in society have been ongoing since the tragedies of May 2023, and they are significant because the parliament, as a place for dialogue, is not fulfilling its role, said the President of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabic, in the show Sinteza.
Speaking about the ongoing student blockades due to the accident in Novi Sad, where 15 people died in a canopy collapse, the President of the National Assembly emphasized that she believes there are many reasons for the current events.
"Tensions have been ongoing since the May tragedies of 2023, and they are significant because the parliament, as a place for dialogue, is not fulfilling its role," Ana Brnabic said.
She also added that she believes students do not feel they have representatives in the National Assembly.
Students from the Faculty of Law at the University of Belgrade submitted a letter to the Chief Public Prosecutor, Zagorka Dolovac, urging her to do her job, and she invited a delegation of students for a meeting.
Students who have been blocking university faculties for weeks organized a protest gathering with farmers at Slavija Square in Belgrade, during which tribute was paid to the victims of the Railway Station in Novi Sad.
"Students do not feel sufficiently represented through their representatives, their voices are not being heard, and their interests are not adequately represented and achieved. This is something that everyone should question, but primarily the opposition," said the Sinteza guest.
Brnabic noticed that part of the student body, which disagrees with the government, is opposition-oriented, but believes that students feel they do not have people in opposition parties who adequately represent them.
"As long as there is no discussion in parliament, people will feel like they are not adequately represented. I am open to dialogue, but my advice to the opposition is to use their mandates for conversation instead of blowing whistles and vuvuzelas," she noted.
Student demands are confusing
She also emphasized that the student demands are confusing because they were discussed even after President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic fulfilled all four demands, but she does not dispute the blockades.
"I believe that student unrest is a natural and good thing for the country and society. It is also a sign of democracy. Someone feels they have the freedom to express their disagreement," said our interlocutor.
She also added that she is concerned that the protests may turn into anarchism.
"There is a complete lack of transparency in the protests. We do not know who the plenary is, who represents them, how decisions are made, and who decides," she stated.
Brnabic also reminded that the Supreme Public Prosecutor, Zagorka Dolovac, invited the students to a meeting, but they said they did not have a delegation.
"They lack transparency," concluded Brnabic.
She also emphasized that it is not wise to dismantle institutions, but rather to strengthen them.
