Prime Minister Milos Vucevic laid a wreath at the Menorah in Flames monument on the Danube Promenade in Belgrade, marking the beginning of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration.
Vucevic, representing the President of the Republic, attended the ceremony alongside Serbian government ministers Adrijana Mesarovic, Zoran Gajic, Nemanja Starovic, Tatjana Macura, Novica Toncev, and Tomislav Zigmanov, as well as Israel's ambassador Avivit Bar-Ilan, Russia's ambassador Aleksandar Bocan Harcenko, Belgrade Deputy Mayor Vesna Vidovic, members of the Serbian Armed Forces, foreign military delegations, the diplomatic corps in Belgrade, and descendants of victims and survivors.
Rabbi Isak Asiel also participated, opening the ceremony with a prayer.
Vucevic stated that the Holocaust is one of the greatest tragedies experienced by humanity in modern history. He emphasized that Serbia has made extraordinary efforts over the past decade to build a lasting culture of remembrance for its victims of this crime, stressing the importance of preserving and passing on Holocaust memories to future generations.
“Today, we gather to remember the millions who suffered, were tortured, and killed simply because they did not fit the ideological views of the Nazi regime. Jews, Slavs, Roma, political dissidents, and others were victims of a destructive ideology that cast a dark shadow over the history of Europe and all of humanity,” said Vucevic.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed on January 27 in memory of the day in 1945 when Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz, a German concentration camp that was the site of the largest mass atrocity in history.
It is estimated that at least 1.1 million people were killed in Auschwitz during World War II, about 90 percent of whom were Jews.
