"We must complete the unification of Europe and finalize the enlargement process. Europe is our shared home, and everyone must find their place within it. This is our shared goal with Serbia and its citizens," Giaufret said at a formal reception held at the Madlena Palace of Arts in Belgrade.
He emphasized that Europe, together with Serbia, wants to continue building a Europe based on democratic values, adding that human dignity and the rule of law are values upheld by the European Union.
"Serbia is Europe, and we are better together," Giaufret declared.
He expressed confidence that the EU will remain committed to the accession path so that Serbia can take its rightful place – a path, he noted, that goes through reforms.
"Our Union is built on the principles of democracy, the rule of law, and the respect for human rights. We are proud of our values and determined to defend them," Giaufret said, adding that they want to protect free journalism, which, he noted, is an essential pillar of any society.
Giaufret also mentioned that this was his last Europe Day in Serbia as the EU Ambassador and added that he had made many friends in Serbia, learned to appreciate the sense of community, and thanked everyone who made him feel welcome.
The reception was attended by the President of the Serbian National Assembly Ana Brnabic, Prime Minister Djuro Macut, ministers from the Serbian government, Provincial Government President Maja Gojkovic, and representatives of the diplomatic corps, institutions, religious communities, and the opposition.
