Secretary General of the Bureau International des Expositions on EXPO 2027: An Event That Will Inspire the Planet
Belgrade is becoming the center of global attention, with 110 countries already confirming their participation in EXPO 2027 – the fastest-filled world exposition in history, said Dimitri Kerkentzes, Secretary General of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE).
Kerkentzes in an interview with Newsmax Balkans added that the world is already prepared to come to Serbia and that the EXPO in Belgrade will be an event that inspires the planet.
"We came to visit Belgrade on behalf of the BIE to see how the EXPO 2027 project is progressing. Belgrade has become a place of great interest and incredible excitement around the world," said the BIE Secretary General.
With a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, Serbia’s pavilion at the world exhibition EXPO 2025 in Osaka was officially opened. Named “Society of Play”, it features an innovative construction made of sustainable eco-materials.
The director of EXPO 2027, Dusan Borovcanin, told Newsmax Balkans that the opposition’s request to cancel the international exhibition in Belgrade does not pose a threat to its realization.
He emphasized that, in the 56 months since the official recognition of the project, 110 countries have confirmed their participation.
"This is the fastest-filled EXPO we’ve ever seen. It shows there is tremendous excitement and a genuine desire to be present in Belgrade in 2027. I believe we are seeing a continuation of the momentum from what is currently happening in Osaka at EXPO 2025. That is an extraordinary event – one of the most impressive EXPOs I’ve ever seen," Kerkentzes pointed out.
He stressed that countries are looking forward to transitioning from Osaka to Belgrade.
"With an incredible number of countries present and truly expressing their vision of the theme ‘Designing the Future Society for Our Lives,’ nations are already looking forward to moving from Osaka to Belgrade in 2027 to address the theme ‘Play for Humanity’ – not only through sport and music but also through culture, artificial intelligence, education, theory – everything we can imagine and allow our creativity to bring to life at this EXPO," he emphasized.
He added that he observes an incredible willingness and enthusiasm.
"I believe we will clearly see that next week at the first international participants’ meeting, which will be held here in Belgrade. This is a key moment for the EXPO. For the first time, countries will be present here. We have over 130 confirmed participants, which once again confirms the level of interest and excitement surrounding this exhibition," said Kerkentzes.
He further noted that this event fits into the global narrative of how EXPO 2027 in Belgrade will evolve and inspire the world in June 2027.
