As the number of countries confirming their participation in the EXPO 2027 international exhibition in Belgrade continues to grow, so does the pressure to cancel the event, which is expected to last three months and attract around four million visitors.
The opposition has officially submitted a request to the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris for an urgent cancellation, citing systemic corruption, non-transparent public spending, and serious security risks.
"Something like this has never happened before. Exhibitions have never been canceled due to the demands of certain political groups," Borovcanin emphasized, adding that the decision on the matter is made by the 184 member states that have entrusted Serbia with hosting the event.
So far, 80 countries have confirmed their participation in the exhibition in Belgrade, he added.
"Such requests, of course, do not contribute to our reputation and credibility, but the realization of EXPO 2027 is in no way threatened," Borovcanin stressed.
He further explained that, from the moment a host is selected, preparations and project implementation are closely monitored, and Serbia has been regularly reporting on its progress.
"So far, everything is going according to plan. Some aspects are even progressing faster than expected," Borovcanin highlighted.
According to him, the project is advancing on two fronts – one focused on infrastructure and construction, and the other on organization and planning. He also mentioned plans for a promotional tour across Serbia to better explain the benefits of the exhibition to the public.
