Minister of the Interior: 19,903 Protests Held in Serbia from November 1 to June 15; 672 Individuals Prosecuted
Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic stated that 19,903 protests were held in Serbia between November 1 and June 15, that the police professionally maintained order despite numerous challenges, and that LRAD devices were not activated during the protests.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said that the security situation in Serbia is stable, despite numerous internal and external challenges.
Speaking at a session of the Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Internal Affairs, he emphasized that general crime in 2024 is down 45% compared to 2001, the year it reached its historical peak.
According to him, the number of murders and aggravated murders has dropped from 215 in 2001 to just 50 this year – the lowest number in the past 25 years.
"Robberies, thefts, and unauthorized use of vehicles are also at record-low levels. A total of 26 organized criminal groups have been prosecuted, and 164 individuals have been arrested. Domestic violence crimes have dropped by 20%, while the number of rape cases is 3.4 times lower than in 2000," said Minister Dacic.
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic stated that an official report from the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has been received, concluding that the acoustic device owned by Serbian police authorities was not used during the protest held on March 15 in Belgrade.
Members of the academic community, students, and citizens have blocked the intersection in front of the Serbian Government building, where a protest titled "Universities at a Crossroads" is taking place.
He particularly highlighted that from November 1 of last year to June 15 of this year, public gatherings were held at 19,903 locations, and traffic was blocked at 19,964 locations.
"The police acted professionally, without offensive actions, protecting institutions and citizens," said Dacic, adding that a total of 672 individuals were prosecuted – 227 criminally and 445 for misdemeanors.
Speaking about the controversy surrounding LRAD devices, known as "sound cannons," Dacic emphasized that these systems were legally purchased and are intended solely for informing the public.
During the protests on March 15, the devices were not used, and not even the pre-recorded warning message was played.
