Government of Serbia Sends Request to the U.S. for New Postponement of Sanctions Against NIS

Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, noted that the request was submitted in order to preserve the security of oil and petroleum product supply in Serbia and to prevent serious negative consequences of the sanctions on Serbian citizens and the economy.

Djedović Handanovic emphasized that Europe and the world are now, perhaps more than ever, facing uncertainties in the global oil market and a price increase of up to 20 percent over the past two weeks, all due to the conflict in the Middle East.

"Additional disruptions in supply chains, combined with potential sanctions against NIS, could seriously threaten Serbia’s energy security and negatively impact not only our citizens but also residents across the region. We have informed representatives of the U.S. administration about all of this and requested a new postponement of the sanctions – that is, an extension of NIS’s operating license," said Djedovic Handanovic.

She also reminded that Serbia has successfully managed to postpone the implementation of the sanctions three times already.
