Minister of Mining and Energy: Serbia Considering Two Options for Nuclear Energy Development
Serbia has received its first technical study on the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic stated that two options are being considered: traditional nuclear power plants and small modular reactors (SMRs), which are increasingly gainin
To meet the growing electricity demand, nuclear power is being viewed globally — in addition to increasing the share of renewables — as a reliable energy source. By mid-century, Brussels alone plans to invest €240 billion in nuclear projects in EU member states. Serbia is also exploring options for developing a nuclear program.
Traditional nuclear power plants offer economic advantages, while SMRs offer greater flexibility, modular expansion potential, and lower initial investment costs.
The Government of the Republic of Serbia announced that it has formed a Commission for Damage Recovery following the fires that affected several areas of Serbia during July this year and has allocated 350 million dinars to assist those impacted.
“One of the technologies is not yet technically or technologically confirmed. These are small modular reactors, which are still in development. We have commercial nuclear plants that offer economies of scale, while SMRs offer flexibility, modularity, and lower investment costs,” said Djedovic Handanovic.
The study showed that integration of nuclear energy into Serbia’s existing transmission system is possible, but not in the near future — rather in 15 to 20 years.
According to the minister, preparation for building nuclear facilities requires completing certain phases according to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines, which take five to seven years.
During that period, additional studies and analyses must be conducted, and a body established to oversee the development of the nuclear program.
DOKUMENTARNI PROGRAM-DEKADE-RADIO AMATERI PROTIV NATO-A
