Trump Announces No Extension of Tariff Deadline; Vucic Says Serbia Is in Talks with the U.S.
The United States will not postpone the introduction of tariffs for more than 14 countries, including Serbia, scheduled for August 1, U.S. President Donald Trump announced.
As a reminder, on July 7, Trump released letters sent to the leaders of 14 countries in which he announced the imposition of tariffs ranging from 25% to 40% on goods from their countries starting August 1.
The list includes Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Tunisia, South Africa, South Korea, and Japan, as well as Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
U.S. President Donald Trump has notified more than 10 countries of new tariff rates set to take effect on August 1, with Serbia facing tariffs of 35 percent. He noted that such tariff policy could change if a trade agreement is reached.
The United States and the European Union have signed an agreement introducing reciprocal tariffs of 15 percent on the import of goods and services. Bojan Stanic from the Serbian Chamber of Commerce told Newsmax Balkans that tariffs on Serbian goods could be significantly lower than the announced.
President Aleksandar Vucic stated that Serbia is in negotiations with the United States regarding the tariffs set to take effect on August 1 and that a response is awaited to the proposal submitted to the U.S. administration.
“We presented our proposal. We are a small country, but this creates problems for us, primarily in the rubber and defense industries. Everything else is, of course, less affected, but everything matters to us. We have submitted our proposal, and we are awaiting a response, which I believe we will receive soon,” Vucic said.
He added that Trump first wants to resolve matters with the “big players.”
