U.S. President Donald Trump has notified more than 10 countries of new tariff rates set to take effect on August 1, with Serbia facing tariffs of 35 percent. He noted that such tariff policy could change if a trade agreement is reached.
In a letter to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, published on his TruthSocial account, Trump stated that these tariffs may be adjusted – either upward or downward – depending on the state of U.S.–Serbia relations.
He added that Belgrade "will never be disappointed by the United States of America".
"It is a great honor to send you this letter in that it demonstrates the strength and commitment of our Trading Relationship, and the fact that the United States of America has agreed to continue working with Serbia, despite having a significant Trade Deficit with your great Country. We look forward to working with you as your Trading Partner for many years to come. If you wish to open your heretofore closed Trading Markets to the United States, and eliminate your Tariff, and Non Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter", Trump wrote.
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic stated in a speech that he expects to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in the next 30 days, most likely at the beginning of May, on U.S. territory.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced from the Rose Garden at the White House, on the occasion of Liberation Day, that the United States is imposing a 25% tariff on all cars manufactured outside the country.
In the letter, Donald Trump asked Vucic to understand that the 35% tariff is far below what is actually required to eliminate the trade deficit between the two countries.
“As you are aware, there will be no Tariff if Serbia, or companies within your Country, decide to build or manufacture product within the United States, and, in fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely – In other words, in a matter of weeks,” Trump stated.
He explained that Serbia will be charged 35% tariffs on all Serbian goods shipped to the U.S., separate from any sector-specific tariffs. He added that goods re-routed through third countries to avoid higher tariffs would be subject to those same higher rates.
Trump sent similar letters regarding the introduction of new tariffs to leaders of over 14 countries, including Japan and South Korea, which were assigned a 25% tariff.
The same 25% rate was set for Malaysia, Kazakhstan, and Tunisia. South Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina will face tariffs of 30%, Indonesia 32%, Bangladesh 35%, Cambodia and Thailand 36%, and Laos and Myanmar 40%.
In his letters, Trump warned the countries against taking reciprocal measures, stating that the U.S. would respond with additional tariffs if they did.
