Brnabic Meets Quint Representatives and EU Delegation: Violence Is an Attack on the Constitutional Order
The President of the National Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, conveyed during discussions with the head of the EU Delegation in Serbia and the heads of mission of Quint countries her concern regarding the “brutal violence” taking place in the streets.
She particularly emphasized the overt violence of the past seven days, stressing that this represents a direct assault on the constitutional order.
“Every day, attacks are occurring on the police and public institutions, the judiciary and prosecution services, the burning of party premises – primarily those of the SNS but also of other political parties – destruction of property, physical endangerment and assaults on journalists, as well as intimidation of the family members of government officials,” she said.
Protests organized by the Students in Blockade movement and civic assemblies were held in several cities across Serbia. In Valjevo, protesters set fire to the offices of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), as well as the entrances to the City Administration and Prosecutor’s Office buildings.
The Serbian Patriarch Porfirije called for an end to all conflicts and the rejection of words and actions that cause pain and wounds to others, stressing that nothing is more destructive than hatred, division and violence among brothers, and that nothing is more precious than peace and fraternal lov
She underlined that such actions constitute a direct attack on the constitutional order, media freedom, and the fundamental safety of citizens, and cannot be reduced to political disagreement or peaceful protest, according to a statement from the National Assembly.
Brnabic stressed that a firm and unequivocal response from the international community is necessary.
She informed her interlocutors in detail about measures undertaken in the areas of rule of law and European integration, emphasizing that the opening of Cluster 3 and further progress in the EU accession process are of crucial importance for Serbia.

EU Ambassador to Serbia Andreas von Beckerath underscored the need for all sides to respect fundamental rights, including the right to peaceful assembly. This also entails avoiding any form of violence against political opponents and political party premises as a form of political protest, according to a statement from the EU Delegation in Serbia.
He condemned all forms of hatred and violence and called on all actors to de-escalate tensions. Dialogue across the political spectrum was highlighted as the only path forward, accompanied by restraint from inflammatory rhetoric and disinformation about the ongoing protests.
The EU Ambassador further emphasized that police action must be proportionate and consistent with fundamental rights; any suspicion of excessive use of force must be properly investigated, including concerning reports of threats and violence against journalists.
Ambassador von Beckerath also stressed that Serbia’s European path offers solutions to many of the country’s key challenges, including reforms in the areas of rule of law, media freedom, electoral reform, and the creation of an enabling environment for civil society.
